Not even the divine intervention of wind, rain, and lightning could save Moorpark College in a 7-0 thrashing by the Lasers in a storm delayed game on Wednesday afternoon at Irvine.
The Raiders were already down 3-0 at halftime when the game was stopped for over an hour early in the second half. The Lasers upped their game after the delay and poured on four additional goals.
“Seven to nothing, is not something you ever want to endure,” Head Coach Sean Roche said. “At this point in time they were more in tune than we were. Everybody tried hard and contributed what they could. It just wasn’t enough.”
According to Irvine Valley’s report of the game, Toby Waterman scored on a penalty kick in the ninth minute. Alan McTiernan added a second in the 14th minute that was described as “a left footed rocket.” Khalid Francis leaped above the Raiders’ defense to head in the third in the 28th minute as the storm clouds gathered.
“They were good.” Coach Roche said. “Our goalkeeper [Allan Montalvo] had seven breakaway saves, which doesn’t say too much about our defense, but he certainly did a very good job in keeping us close enough at the time.”
After the rain delay, the scoring floodgates burst when Jose Rivera scored twice. His first in the 51st and second in the 60th minute, making it 5-0. Irvine still wasn’t done as Joseph Ferguson added one in the 68th, and McTiernan completed the rout with his second goal in the 72nd minute.
“It was Irish rain and the wind blew the pop-ups off the field,” Coach Roche said. “The wind started and [was followed by] torrential rain and lightning.”
Moorpark (0-2-0) hosts Cypress College (0-3-1), on Friday, Sept. 11 at 3 p.m. in the season’s home opener. The Raiders hope to turn the tide and score some goals against the Chargers after having lost its first two games by shutouts.
“One would like to think we’re [evenly matched] but I’m respectful,” said Coach Roche about Cypress. “Having being beaten 7-0 we have to redeem ourselves before being critical of everybody else.”
