California State University Long Beach graduate, Yevgeniya Mikhailik is the first to present her latest work, “Terrains,” at the Moorpark Art Gallery this fall season.

These pieces will feature mixed mediums of painting and drawing, all inspired by maps and typography, according to the Moorpark Art Department.

The art is currently available to view and will be available thorough Oct 7, Monday- Thursday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Friday 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. in the administration building, next to the dean’s office.

“Yevgeniya’s work is beautiful and detailed in her use of color and line to create abstract landscapes.” said Erika Lizee, art gallery director, through e-mail.

Lizee has seen Mikhailik’s work previously at other galleries and is impressed by her unique concept and the amount of skill she has shown in these detailed works of art.

“My main focus with our exhibitions is to show artists that combine technical mastery of their materials with interesting subject matter to create dynamic visual images,” said Lizee. “Yevgeniya’s work is beautiful and detailed in her use of color and line to create abstract landscapes.”

The artist held a lecture earlier this week explaining the deeper meaning behind some of her work that was featured in the gallery. While some pieces were playful, other works of art had more significance to certain periods of her life.

Yevgeniya has a history of moving throughout her life; she was born in Russia having just moved to America 15-years-ago.

“This constant process of relocation engrained itself into my identity. It so much a part of who I am and how I relate to the world,” said Mikhailik. “With these pieces, it’s about understanding the actual feeling of relocation beyond just specific places.”

The artist will continue to open exhibits and paint, while also looking for opportunities to collaborate with other artist.

“There are some things in the works but the thing that I make a point of doing is being really open to different opportunities,” said Mikhailik. “I keep my options open.”

She currently works as a curator for the Grand Central Art Center at California State University Fullerton. However this is not her first exhibit, her work has been displayed in galleries throughout the LA County such as Pasadena and Culver City.

“Terrain is my only solo exhibition that is currently on view,” said Mikhailik. “However, Raw Salt Gallery in Laguna Beach has several pieces on display on an ongoing basis.”
