On Wednesday, the Woman’s Volleyball team took on the LA Mission College Eagles in a conference home game, losing 3-1.
After starting off hot and winning their first set 25-14, the Lady Raiders lost three straight games: 25-23, 25-23, and 25-20.
Head Coach Steve Burkhart was almost speechless in how his team played against a team who everyone thought would be an easy win.
“We relaxed and didn’t play well,” said Burkhart.” And they played really well. It’s a good lesson for us to learn.”
Moorpark’s Meghan Conlan had the most kills with 13 and tied with seven other players for the most spikes with four. She scored a total of 14 points for her team.
Conlan, who was upset with the defeat, felt her team got very cocky.
“We got comfortable and felt we were going to beat them easy,” said Conlan. “We let up and were very complacent about it.”
Conlan also felt the team would have to improve on their offense, hitting the ball and not committing so many errors.
Moorpark freshman Cindy Norris had 12 kills and led the team with four spikes. Norris also scored the most points for the team with 16.
Sophomore Sierra Joyner led the team with 30 digs and scored a total of 2 points for her team.
Sophomore Alyssa Wilson had four spikes and 10 kills for her team and scored a total of 5.5 points.
Wilson, who was very upset over the team’s loss, believes that the team will improve because they are so full of potential.
“There’s not a lot of experience and we just have to find the heart,” said Wilson. “Because the skill and the effort and everything you need to win physically wise is there, but mentally we are just not all up to par.”
With only one day until their next game, there isn’t a whole lot of time for the Lady Raiders to practice. After the loss, Coach Burkhart feels there is much to practice and cut down on.
Moorpark’s next home game will be next Wednesday, Oct. 28 against LA Pierce College at 6 p.m.
