Moorpark College traveled to Glendora and earned three precious points in its first away win in almost two years with a 2-0 victory over Citrus College on the return leg of its Western State Conference men’s soccer rivalry early on Friday afternoon.
The win lifted the Raiders (2-8-2) from the bottom of the table for the second time this season and avenged its first leg loss to Citrus in September. Moorpark now sits one point above the hapless Owls (2-9-1), who had its wings clipped and lies grounded in the WSC basement.
According to official reports, freshman winger Filipe Luz opened the scoring for the Raiders with an unassisted goal to make it 1-0 in the 33rd minute. A team leader in goals scored, Luz was credited with his fourth goal for Moorpark so far this season.
Freshman goalkeeper Daniel Moreno led a much improved defensive effort for the Raiders and made several spectacular saves in the game to preserve his first shutout win of the season.
Freshman midfielder Javier Hernandez put the issue beyond doubt in the 85th minute when he scored on an assist from defender Kenta Nutley, who had a great impact on the game when he came off the bench in the second half.
The Raiders travel to Santa Maria today for the return leg of the WSC matchup against Allan Hancock College. Kickoff time is 3 p.m. Moorpark defeated the Bulldogs 3-0 at the Raiders Pitch in September and are hoping for a repeat performance, this time in enemy territory.
