Moorpark College (2-9-2) was shutout 1-0 in the return leg of its Western State Conference men’s soccer match-up against Allan Hancock College (3-8-3) in Santa Maria on Tuesday afternoon.
After having won its first game last month over the Bulldogs 3-0, hopes that the Raiders could prevail on the road were dashed. Sophomore defender, Mike Arevalo scored on an easy tap in on a Moorpark defensive error inside the 18 yard box for the only score in the 42nd minute.
“We dominated with more possession and more shots,” freshman midfielder Sam Curren said. “[But we] lost the game 1-0 when they scored in the 40th minute.”
According to eyewitness accounts, Moorpark’s Daniel Moreno was the busier of the two goalkeepers, especially in the second half. Because the Bulldogs controlled the pace of the game after the break, Moreno was called upon to make several close-range saves to keep the Raiders close.
Moorpark had several scoring opportunities early on, but lacked the killer instinct to press home its advantages. The long three-hour ride to Santa Maria may have taken its toll on the visitors in the second half, as the game wore on.
Since Citrus College was hammered 5-0 at College of the Canyons on Tuesday, the Raiders maintain a slim one point advantage in eighth place in the WSC while the hapless Owls remain grounded in the basement.
The Raiders travel to Glendale on Friday for the return leg of the WSC rivalry against the Vaqueros under the lights at 5 p.m. In the first leg in October, Moorpark was ahead 2-1 when Glendale scored from a disputed penalty kick to tie it in overtime. The visitors will be looking for a better outcome this time around.
