Students who are interested in receiving information on upcoming scholarships can do so now by filling out a sign-up sheet provided at the scholarship office, located inside Fountain Hall, room 210C.
More opportunities for some extra money will be available to Moorpark College students as soon as the spring semester begins in January.
According to Maria Perez-Medeiros, scholarship technician in the scholarship office, this fall, an estimated 20 students will be granted The Oshers Scholarship, five through the Moorpark College Continuing Students Scholarship and another five through the Simi Valley/Moorpark Scholarship.
These are scholarships that are only available during the fall, but a lot more will be offered during spring .
“In the spring semester is where the majority of the scholarships are offered,” said Perez-Medeiros.
Just this past spring, 82 different scholarships were available to students.
Tanner Strommen, 20, communications major, says that it is very important for students to apply for scholarships.
“Scholarships can help us have the same opportunities as other students,” said Strommen.
Bianca Santos, 22, nursing major, said she’d like to see more scholarships for students who don’t receive any financial assistance, like herself.
“We don’t qualify for financial aid,” said Santos. “We’re basically stuck in the middle.”
Perez-Medeiros said she has a list of over 4,800 students to which she must send out a newsletter as soon as she is provided with the list of scholarships in the beginning of January.
“In the spring semester, at the beginning of January, my supervisors and I look through the scholarships and see if we have funding for all of them,” said Perez-Medeiros. “The ones we are funding for, we will advertise, and then any new scholarships that are established I will include in that list.”
Perez-Medeiros said that an online scholarship process is in the works, making it more convenient for students.
