Discussion of Interim Chancellor Bernard Luskin’s current contract and recognition of the Oxnard College men’s soccer team, who are the 2015 state champions, filled the monthly Ventura County Community College District Board of Trustees meeting on Tuesday Jan. 19.
Luskin has been the Interim Chancellor since July 2015, and the proposed contract would extend his tenure until July 2017. Trustee Arturo D. Hernandez expressed his support for Luskin, and said extending his contract provides stability.
“In my point of view this is the most prudent thing to do,” Hernandez said.
Many in the public including Steve Hall, president of the Ventura County Federation of College Teachers, felt that Luskin’s contract extension, although legally added to the agenda, had been added last minute to avoid proper review.
“It seriously undermines the shared governance,” Hall said. “It gives the perception that the interim chancellor is sneaking his contract in.”
After listening to Bonifacio Garcia from the board’s law firm, the board members voted to postpone taking action on the contract till next month’s meeting to allow further review.
The board also recognized the men’s soccer team of Oxnard College, who won the 2015 state championship. The board members and Luskin honored and awarded the team and coach.
The board also discussed its upcoming move to Camarillo from its current Ventura home. The move is being made in an effort to centralize the location, and will likely take place in December.
