Understanding how to manage student loans and achieve a good credit score are the main topics in an upcoming lecture on Feb. 17.

The lecture is called “Personal Financial Success,” and it is part of the Year of Wellness lecture series.

“Students need to understand it is important their credit scores are high for their future because it will affect them throughout life,” said Tim Weaver, business and accounting professor at Moorpark College, and the lecturer. “Your credit score comes into play in job interviews, insurance rates and starting next year they will be checking your credit score when applying for car insurance.”

Not only will Weaver discuss credit scores, but the daunting subject of student loans and how much debt students should be in compared to their earnings after they graduate.

“Student loans are actually very worthwhile to get into if they are handled appropriately,” Weaver said. “Perhaps from this lecture, students will gain understanding of what exactly their degree can do, how credit works and managing it, and about their own personal income.”

Dean Inajane Nicklas, who organized the lecture along with Weaver, has known him for a long time and has heard him speak before. Nicklas thought the lecture would be a perfect fit for the financial wellness aspect for the Year of Wellness.

“I think this topic is very important considering how expensive college is,” said Nicklas. “We want students to enjoy a good quality of life when they graduate. We don’t want them to be in debt or not know how to manage their money.”

Nicklas sees this lecture as not only informative for students attending or graduating college, but for people at all times of their lives.

“The big takeaway from this lecture is long term financial planning, to start saving now to prepare for the future,” Nicklas said.

The lecture starts at noon in the Television Studio, room 129, which is located in the Communications Building.
