Students will be able to easily submit their scholarship applications online starting Feb. 16.
Students now only have to fill out one application for all the scholarships they apply to, whereas in the past they had to fill out a separate one for each scholarship, according to Maria Perez-Medeiros, who runs the Scholarship Office.
“I think the students are going to like this because it is gonna eliminate a lot of actual paper, which I think is gonna be helpful to them,” said Perez-Medeiros.
Now students will fill out one application where they enter information like their GPA and major. They will also be able to upload transcripts and letters of recommendation. In the past, students had to make separate copies for each application. The online application will also be automatically saved every 30 or 45 minutes making the process easier, said Perez-Medeiros.
Around 80 different scholarships are available from the Moorpark College Foundation, and that number is expected to increase, according to Perez-Medeiros. There are also eight outside scholarships being offered. Around 15 of the scholarships will be for students continuing fall 2016. Maria also wants students to know that multiple students can win some of the same scholarships.
One of the scholarships the Foundation offers is the Southern California Edison S.T.E.M. Scholarship and that will give 15 awards of $1,000 to science, technology, engineering and math majors.
The Associated Students also offer scholarships through the Foundation.
There will be five scholarships each with their own unique set of requirements. The scholarships are called Student Leadership, Excellence in Social Sciences, Excellence in Arts and Humanities, Excellence in Applied Physical or Biological Sciences and Continuing Student General Studies Endowment, said Carmel Gutherz, A.S. vice president and a former scholarship recipient.
Gutherz said that this year A.S. will offer two Student Leadership scholarships worth $1,000 instead of 10 $200 scholarships like last year.
“We wanted to reward students who are benefiting the student community at Moorpark College,” said Gutherz. “Being involved and showing outstanding commitments to the college and student life.”
Gutherz also said students that should take advantage of the Writing Center to start writing or further improve their scholarship essays.
If students need help with the scholarship process, Perez-Medeiros said they’re welcome to visit the Scholarship Office at Fountain Hall, room 210C. Students can also email the office at [email protected] or call (805) 378-1418.
