La Verne offers bachelor’s degree at Moorpark College

A representative from The University of La Verne will be hosting an information session for students who wish to acquire their bachelor’s degree at Moorpark College on Friday, Feb. 19 from 8 to 9 a.m. in Fountain Hall-117

La Verne’s Regional Campus Director Kevin Laack will be speaking to students about the opportunities within the college and how to obtain their degree in as few as 18 months.

“We wanted to create a program designed to help those who were hindered by one factor or another, to have the same opportunities as everyone who could attend a university,” said Laack. “Students have everything to gain by attending this session, and nothing to lose.”

The partnership between The University of La Verne and Moorpark College began back in 2008 and is centered on convenience, as many students in the Simi Valley and Moorpark area were looking for a way to take classes in a closer proximity, said Laack.

Many of the students currently attending La Verne have diverse personal backgrounds, ranging from working full-time, have ties to the region or having families that have made it difficult to attend a four-year university, said Laack.

Classes meet one night per week while operating on a 10-week accelerated term. This flexibility allows students to begin working towards their majors through The University of La Verne while simultaneously completing lower-division requirements satisfied by Moorpark College classes, Laack said.

The first graduating class of La Verne’s bachelor’s program were Moorpark College alumni.

“The professors are amazing,” said Cianna Lewis, liberal studies major. “They put a lot of thought and time into each class. The assignments and class discussions are thought provoking, enlightening and practical. I appreciate Moorpark allowing us to use the campus. It is only about 15 minutes from my home.”

Admission applications are accepted year-round at La Verne, with majors in organizational management, child development and educational studies.

“Any student who wants a degree the non-traditional route will leave the session with a clear understanding on how our program works and how it could work for them,” said Laack.
