The Raiders looking to improve in their first game of the Western State Conference play after a last weeks 3-0 loss against Golden West College.
Over the loud speaker, the song “TNT” by AC/DC played and the lyrics went “Watch me explode!” That is exactly what the Raiders Volleyball team proceeded to do as they beat El Camino in three straight sets, 25 -11, 25 -18 and 25 -17.
Owen Yoshimoto, a sophomore, was not only excited with his own performance, but that of the entire teams.
“I played pretty well, but today was a team effort and that’s what made the difference,” said Yoshimoto.
Yoshimoto led the team on the night with 13 kills and is number one in total attacks and kills in the state. Chris Salas had nine kills, five digs and two aces, while Ryan Butterworth had 12 kills, eight digs and three blocks.
Andrew Hansen, freshman, enjoyed the game and the team’s overall performance.
“It was fun, we all played well,” said Hansen. “I got a lot of hits, everyone did, so I did my job.”
Hansen however did say the team had some improvements to make.
“[We] need to work on making our serves more, not giving up as many points,” said Hansen.
Coach Aaron Hedland was ecstatic with the win against El Camino.
“It was a really great big win against a good team,” said Hedland.
Hedland noted that beating El Camino was a good sign of things to come.
“I feel good about conference,” said Hedland. “if we can beat El Camino who came in second last year, then we have a good chance of making a playoff run.”
Before that, Hedland said the Raiders will get to work on some areas before next game.
“[We] will build on momentum, balancing the attack [and] distributing the ball evenly,” said Hedland.
The Raiders next game is at home vs. LA Pierce at 6 p.m. on Mar. 16.
