Moorpark College held a sex-related discussion to talk about the physical characteristics of sex, how the modern world has affected our perception of communication and basic human interaction last Thursday, March 10.
Many lectures dwell solely on the risks of sex and how it can have an effect on your health. This discussion however, was much more detailed and in-depth. The lecture was coordinated by members of the health department.
Speakers, Health Educator Allison Barton, Nurse Dena Stevens and Criminal Justice Professor Chad Basile, feel that it is important to educate young people. Many of students are just starting to engage in sexual activity, to learn about regular sexual relationships in the modern age and how it has evolved far beyond anything it used to be.
“I think it’s good information for college kids to have,” said Ballerina. “They had one [lecture] about eating disorders last week too.”
This lecture and many others are often a help to students who want insight form medical professionals on a wide variety of topics. Among the students attending the discussion was Alexis Ballerina, who had only ever been to one other lecture before.
Barton stresses that modern communication between students can be harmful to how we interact or flirt in person.
“How many text messages have you sent or received that aren’t properly construed?” said Barton. “Losing that face-to-face contact in everyday life, we lose the regularity of reading body language.”
In addition to these lectures Stevens wants everyone to know that Moorpark College offers many free services that students can take advantage of.
“We have a wall of all sorts of bins of free things for students,” said Stevens. “It’s paid for by your tuition.”
Among these items are antacids, condoms, pain relievers and several other over-the-counter products. The school also provides services for students ranging from medical appointments to therapy sessions, as mentioned by Basile.
“You can use six sessions per semester,” said Basile. “That’s a session every other week, if you want.”
The college Health Center offers these programs, events and lectures, and urges all students to stop by the center located in the Administration Building.
