After a loss against Santa Barbara City College, The Raiders men’s Volleyball team could not bounce back against Los Angeles Pierce College.
The Raiders and Brahmas went back and forth winning sets, leading to a fifth and final tie breaker set. During a time out, the loud speaker played Queen and the late David Bowie’s famous hit “Under Pressure” that fit the scene perfectly. LA Pierce ended up winning that set and the game concluded with five suspenseful sets: 21-25, 25-21, 27-29, 25-23 and 14-16.
Davis Keairns, sophomore, was not happy with the team’s performance and felt they left their key players hanging.
“We did not play our best at all,” said Keairns. “We really split up and did not pick up our key players so we crumbled.”
Keairns said the team will work on their chemistry for the upcoming games.
“We will work on playing better as a team, get a better attitude going, and pick it up from there,” said Keairns.
Keairns did note the suspenseful nature of the game made for an exciting time for him and it would be a game he would not forget.
“It was a fun game to have, you always remember games like that,” said Keairns.
Ryan Butterworth, sophomore, noted the team did not execute the game plan and that led to their eventual loss.
“We did not play as well as we could have,” said Butterworth. “We started the game with a plan and because we did not follow it, we gave up some key points.”
Butterworth mentioned the team will have work on their energy levels for the rest of the season.
“[We] will keep working on the aggression, that’s been a big problem this season,” Butterworth said.
Butterworth only wished they could have gotten a win out of such an exciting game.
“It was definitely exciting,” said Butterworth. “You could not ask for much more out of a rival game, except for a win at the end.”
Owen Yoshimoto, who recently committed to Pepperdine University, had 21 kills, two blocks and 14 digs. Myles Myers had 13 kills, two blocks, Chris Salas had 11 kills, 16 blocks and Drake Uthe had 16 digs.
Coach Aaron Hedland was not impressed with the team’s performance on the night and commented on the areas that need improvement.
“We played average,” said Hedland. “We will work on minimizing errors, we are making too many.”
Hedland thought the longer five sets had a big impact on the team.
“It left our players tighter,” Hedland said, “Pierce playing good defense also made them tired.”
The Raiders, who are now 3-8, 2-2 in the WSC, will be at home on Mar. 23 at 6 p.m. vs. Santa Monica City College.
