Thousands of dollars were approved for two sports programs on a March 8 Ventura County Community College District Board of Trustees meeting.
Section 14.05 granted Moorpark College’s baseball and basketball extra money for their respective programs. The basketball program received a total of $1,925 along with the baseball team who received a total of $1,151 both for the upcoming 2016-17 athletic season.
The baseball program received the money from Esponsor Now Inc. Basketball’s donor chose to be anonymous.
Moorpark College President Dr. Luis Sanchez was ecstatic to have the extra funds for the sports teams who received them.
“I am happy and grateful,” said Sanchez. “It is hard for community colleges to adequately support its athletic teams without the support of boosters, since our funding from the state only comes from classes held, and there is no additional support from the state for athletic teams and events.”
Moorpark College’s interim athletic director Vance Manakas said that the extra funds will greatly help out basketball and baseball.
“It is nice when people realize the good work that these athletes are doing on the field and in the classroom,” said Manakas. “So when they are able to help the teams out, it is greatly appreciated.”
Manakas also stated that he does not know how baseball and basketball will use their extra funds, but he knows it will be put to good use.
Redshirt freshman pitcher Christian Apodaca feels it’s amazing that people are willing to support the team.
“[It] helps us with maintaining a great field, new updated equipment, balls and coaches,” said Apodaca. “We really appreciate it.”
Raider athletics and Moorpark College as a whole is very fortunate and lucky to have such generous people willing to donate to the school.
