The Moorpark men’s volleyball were finished before the sun set on Collins Drive Wednesday night March 30 in an absolute victory over the Beavers, winning all three sets; 25-11, 25-11 and 25-14.

The Raiders had no problem on the evening executing their game plan. They almost always had double the score that the Beavers of Los Angeles Trade-Technical College had. This performance came without a consistent lineup, as the team was rotated often and frequently with new starting lineups being introduced every set. There was one notable exclusion however, with Owen Yoshimoto being rested a majority of the game only being brought on for very brief appearances at the end of each set.

Coach Aaron Hedland specified that he wanted to give Yoshimoto a rest, and with the team in control for a majority of the game, they experimented with the lineup to ensure everyone had a say in the win.

“We use him a lot, he carries a big load physically for us,” said Hedland. “The team was a lot more relaxed about the game, we got everyone in there, and everyone got to contribute.”

Hedland was excited with the win noting the improvements made as a team and individually. After the game, he was looking to Friday’s important home game against Santa Barbara City College.

“I thought we were improving on a lot of different areas as a team and individually,” said Hedland. “It’s a big match, we didn’t play our best last time we played them, so we hope to play some good volleyball. We match up well against them.”

Davis Keairns, sophomore, felt he did well in the game and was happy to see the team execute the goals they had set out to achieve.

“I felt pretty good about the game, we met the goals we accomplished each goal we had for each set,” said Keairns.

Peter Johnson, sophomore, also was excited about his performance and commended LA Trade Tech on their effort considering they’re a small team size.

“I had a solid game,” said Johnson. “Tonight was a good win. This team definitely fought hard, they are a small team and they made us work for it,” Johnson said.

Keairns thought tonight was merely a warm up for Friday’s game against SBCC emphasizing the importance of winning against the Vaqueros.

“We used the game in preparation for Friday, that’s a must win for us,” said Keairns.

The Raiders, 5-10 overall, and 4-4 in Western State Conference play, hope to improve as they play against the SBCC Vaqueros at 6 p.m. April 1 in Raider Pavilion.
