Humans of Moorpark College comes to campus
April 7, 2016
An adaptation of the popular Humans of New York blog has been started by Chelsea Vanicek, Associated Students public relations director.
Brandon Stanton is the author of the Humans of New York blog and the New York Times bestselling book with the same name. Stanton takes portraits of people around New York City and tells their story through an anecdote.
Vanicek sets out to do something similar with her Humans of Moorpark College Facebook page which was launched on April 1. Vanicek said she wants this page to bring students together.
“I hope to gain the fact students will become more interconnected with one another, embracing community at Moorpark within the student body and make it not so autonomous,” said Vanicek.
Vanicek has found the interviews to be very intriguing and diverse.
“The interviews have been interesting,” Vanicek said. “Some have been very personal dealing with family matters, some go very in depth with their school life. It’s interesting to see how people have reacted to it, some give very detail-oriented interviews while some share brief stories.”
Joseph Alex Reyes, 20, music major, was the first to be interview and talked about what music means to him. Here is an excerpt from his interview.
“I chose music because I can’t see myself doing anything else,” said Reyes. “Music had always been my passion and my safe place. Music has saved my life many times and I want to give the gift of music to the world through my own pieces and performances,”
Vanicek said she conducts interviews throughout the week.
“Interviews are done Monday through Thursday, just when it’s convenient for people,” said Vanicek. “I try not to interview individuals in a hurry.”
