The Student Voice wanted to know which of the many amusement parks in California is Moorpark College’s students favorite and the winner won by a long shot. Disneyland and California Adventure, lovingly known as “The Happiest Place on Earth,” stole the show with 21 out of the 42 total votes, an even 50 percent.
Disneyland was opened July 17, 1955 in Anaheim, California under the direct supervision of Walt Disney. The park features different themed lands, including Adventureland, Frontierland, Fantasyland and Tomorrowland. With rides that range from toddler to adult.
In February 2001, California Adventure opened adjacent to Disneyland. This park was meant to to represent different aspects of California culture and landmarks and also features many different districts that break up the park.
Universal Studios, the famous movie studio turned amusement part, took second place with nine votes, 21 percent. Located near Hollywood in Universal City, it opened on July 15, 1964. This park features awesome behind-the-scenes tours, stunt shows and various 3-D and 4-D rides.
Taking third place with eight votes, or 19 percent of the vote, is Six Flags Magic Mountain and Hurricane Harbor. This park, originally just named Magic Mountain, opened on May 30, 1971 in Valencia, California. In 1979, the company Six Flags bought the park and added it’s name to the beginning.
Knott’s Berry Farm took fourth place in our poll with four votes, 9 percent. In the heart of Buena Park, California during 1920, the Knott family settled on 20 acres of land to farm. Eventually, the small farm transformed into today’s 160-acre theme park which boasts the title of “America’s First Theme Park.”
San Diego based aquatic-themed-amusement-park SeaWorld placed fifth with one vote, 2 percent. On March 21, 1964, SeaWorld opened it’s doors to allow the public to experience their sea lion, dolphin and killer whale exhibits. Shamu, the first killer whale, came to SeaWorld in 1965 and died in 1971. Her name was continued as the stage name for all the killer whales in SeaWorld shows throughout the country.
Finally, in last place receiving no votes is Legoland, It is located in Carlsbad, California and has been operating since 1999. The park features more than 15,000 lego models, the largest being a dinosaur named Bronty that is made out of more than two million lego blocks.
