Raiders buck Bulldogs 7-5 in spectacular extra inning season finale
April 28, 2016
The sounds of the bell clock chiming the six o’clock hour rang across Raider Stadium, Tuesday evening hinting that a dramatic finish to the 2016 baseball season was in store as Moorpark College defeated Hancock College 7-5 in 14 innings.
As the evening shadows spread across the infield, 18-year-old freshman right fielder Jack Rosenberg, hitless in his previous five at-bats, delivered the winning blow over the left-centerfield wall with two outs to give the Raiders a come-from-behind win.
“I got lucky; Jeff [Wilson] was on base ahead of me and I just tried to get the run in,” said Rosenberg. “It was a great way to end the season. We battled back as a team, so it was a good win.”
Down 5-0 in the eighth inning when it looked like its season was going to end with a whimper rather than a bang, the Raiders came alive and scored three runs to make it a two-run game.
“We hung tough and our pitchers [John] Cashman and Michael [Deleon] threw great,” said Head Coach Mario Porto. “ Michael deserved that win. He was dead tired, but he bulldogged it through and did a fantastic job.”
Kai Gomez was hit by a pitch after Ryan Eaton’s single started the eighth inning for the Raiders. Garrett Kueber’s RBI double delivered the first run and Wilson’s groundout drove home the second. Kueber scored from third on a wild pitch to make it 5-3.
“It was a great game and a big win for us,” said Deleon, who got the win pitching six shutout innings. “With Rosey hitting that home run and a lot of defensive plays, it was a great way to end the year.”
In the ninth inning, Kueber’s single to centerfield drove home the tying runs from second and third with one out, after table-setters Blake Chiaramonte’s single and Ryan Eaton, hit-by-pitch, started the rally.
“I thought I did well, but [Deleon] showed me how to pitch,” said reliever John Cashman, who gave up one run and three hits in six strong innings. “That was pretty impressive. My defense made a lot of good plays for me and they kept me in it.”
With two outs in the first inning for the Bulldogs, Moorpark starter Conner Kinser walked the next three batters to load the bases. Two unearned runs scored on no hits when right fielder Colby Barrick was hit by a pitch and shortstop Zach Lampreia walked.
“I called that home run, so it was pretty cool,” said infielder Nick Bero. “It was a long game and I’m really happy that we could end the season with a win.”
In the third inning, Bulldogs catcher Tim Mahoney’s walk was followed by Hunter Christensen’s triple to drive him home. Zach Lampreia’s ground ball to first sent the runner in from third. With a runner at second in the fourth, Jacob Tonascia’s base hit made it 5-0.
“The season didn’t turn out the way we wanted to, but at the same time I gained a band of brothers,” said sophomore Riley Conlan. “It was another good experience and I just love these guys to death.”
