The Moorpark College Music Department brings you the two-time Reno Jazz festival champion: Moorpark College Jazz Ensembles in “All About Jazz.”
“Our Jazz A Band has been awarded first place two years in a row in the Community College Division and we are going to try to repeat that this year,” said Brennan McMullin, music faculty.
The band has been hard at work preparing for the much-anticipated show. McMullin expressed how students have really shown dedication by putting in extra hours to get everything just right.
“It takes a lot of extra initiative on the students’ part to learn their parts and work together,” said McMullin. “There is a ton of work that goes into preparing for an event like this. Not only for the event itself, but for the journey throughout the semester to get to this point,” said McMullin.
During the day on May 14, before “All About Jazz,” the music department will be holding the 3rd Annual Moorpark Jazz Day. This event will take place at the Moorpark Presbyterian Church and will feature performances from all of the jazz ensembles from Mesa Verde Middle School, Chaparral Middle School, the High School at Moorpark College, and Moorpark College.
There will also be an appearance from an established jazz player, Brian Swartz.
“The whole day May 14th is just going to be an epic event,” said McMullin. “Not only do we get to bring the community together during the day, but then we get to bring one of the greats of our Los Angeles jazz scene onto our stage at the college that night. Brian Swartz is also a local jazz hero, being a graduate from CSUN.”
“All About Jazz” will take place on May 14 at 8 p.m. and is expected to pack the house, said McMullin.
“We usually get a pretty full crowd,” said McMullin. “I’m hoping to start selling out the PAC one of these days, but it hasn’t quite happened yet.”
