A student at Moorpark College was arrested on Friday, May 20 for carrying a gun on campus and no one was injured, said district authority.

A student worker failing out of the Exotic Animal Training and Management program was scheduled for an interview Friday morning with a counselor where he revealed he had a gun in his backpack and was going to commit suicide after the meeting, according to a statement provided by the Ventura County Community College District’s Chief of Police Joel Justice.

“It is heartbreaking to see one of our students in such a distraught state of mind as to contemplate suicide,” said College President Luis Sanchez.

According to the statement, the counselor called the Moorpark officers who then took the student into custody for a loaded firearm and placed him on a 72 hour psychiatric hold.

The district is unable to release the student’s or employee’s names.

Sanchez said it is the college’s responsibility to make the campus as safe as possible and is proud of the quick and sensitive response the employees and law enforcement took in this situation.

“Our deepest hope is for the healing and well-being of the student and his family,” said Sanchez.
