Students, community members, and local professional musicians look to perform one of the world’s most outstanding and prominent musical shows of all time.
This October, the Moorpark College Symphony Orchestra will be showcasing the globally known “Beethoven’s 2nd Symphony.” This highly anticipated event will be shown Oct. 29 at 7:30 p.m. in the campus’s Performing Arts Center.
James Song, chair of the music department and director of the orchestra, explains the challenges that comes with having such a diversity of experienced musicians participating in this event.
“We have different levels of musicians on the orchestra,” said Song. “So we have to try to find a level that everyone feels that they have accomplished something.”
Song is not only the director, but also the conductor of this event and says he always sets his expectations high for all his concerts. As director, he must prepare each and every musician to their best capacity in order to provide a show with good-quality orchestra music.
“My job as the conductor is to bring all of them together and make it sound like music,” said Song. “When people hear us, they won’t be able to tell the difference of those who are more experienced than others.”
This semester’s performance also includes the written work of other musicians, such as composer Steve Birch and historic music composer Carl Maria Von Weber’s “Clarinet Concerto” composed in 1811.
For Song, this event is particularly special as it is celebrating 25 years of the orchestra here at Moorpark College, a program that Song has been with since the beginning.
“We will be premiering a piece written by Steve Birch that was made exclusively for Moorpark to celebrate our 25th year as an orchestra,” said Song.
Song encourages everyone to attend this one-time musical event.
“[Students] can expect to hear good, quality music of Beethoven and they will be entertained,” said Song.
