Students are expected to crowd the Performing Arts Center in fear as Moorpark College’s theater arts department gathers the stage for an eight-show, 10-day period for the highly anticipated “Night of the Living Dead” theatrical production premiering Oct. 13.
“Night of the Living Dead,” a horror cult-classic film originally written and directed by George A. Romero in 1968, then later adapted for the stage by Lori Allen Ohm, follows the frightening journey of seven unlucky souls as they find themselves trapped inside a Pennsylvanian farmhouse amidst a sudden flesh-eating zombie attack.
The play’s actors, chosen by director and full-time theater arts department instructor Suzanne Fagan, began rehearsing on Aug. 29. The talented cast is headed by Eliana Rosen, 21-year-old theatre arts major, and Harry Cho, 18-year old film and television media major, who portray the lead roles of Barbara and Ben, respectively.
“I’m really happy with the cast,” said Fagan. “Everyone brings something different, even the zombies.”
According to Fagan, the zombies have all created extensive background stories for their undead characters in attempt to bring their roles to life (pun intended).
For students who are not notable fans of the zombie craze of today’s popular culture, led by television shows such as “The Walking Dead” and video games like “The Last of Us,” Fagan encourages all to come out to “Night of the Living Dead” simply for the play’s live and unique theatrical appeal alone.
“Theater is communal,” says Fagan. “It’s about being with the other audience members and going through this experience together and surviving the night.”
However, rehearsals for “Night of the Living Dead” haven’t gone without a few obstacles, admits Fagan.
“There have been challenges for sure, but that comes with theater,” said Fagan. “There are so many different elements to our play. For example, it is very tech-heavy. [All branches involved in the play are] on the same page to put on a great show, but it is always a challenge to cater to everyone.”
According to the theater arts department, “Night of the Living Dead” is set to launch at 8 p.m. on the night of Oct. 13 in the Performing Arts Center with alternate night shows taking place on Oct. 14 to 15 and 20 to 22. Matinee shows will be held on Oct. 16 and 23 at 2 p.m.
