Strike the competition, spare some cash

Moorpark College students are invited to bring along their friends, families, or clubs to play the lanes for the second annual Bowling for Scholars Tournament in support of the Moorpark College Foundation.
The second annual event will be headed to a larger event this time around at Harley’s Valley Bowl in Simi Valley on Nov. 5. Hosted by the Moorpark College Foundation itself, the Bowling for Scholars Tournament is an effort to raise funds for Moorpark College scholarships and programs like EATM and Nursing.
Starting at 11:30 a.m. and running until 1:30 p.m., anyone looking to throw a few strikes can do so to help Moorpark College, with tickets including two games, shoe rentals, pizza, and unlimited soft drinks all for $50.
Executive director of the Moorpark College Foundation David Mirisch, who started this event last year, explains why bowling was the activity of choice for a fundraiser aimed at letting students’ friends and families support the school.
“I decided to go with a bowling event because it’s a fun event for everyone to go to and you get to interact with one another,” said Mirisch. “Even children who are four or five will be able to play. There will be bumper lanes available for everyone to use”
Having coordinated over 2,000 events over his career, Mirisch is no stranger to creative fundraising. He explained this since last year’s event was a success, he hopes this year’s second pass at the event will be even better.
“We sold 24 lanes last year and this year we have moved to a bigger venue, Harley’s Valley Bowl, that is a 40 lane facility,” said Mirisch. “Last year we raised $10,000 and we hope to raise more this year.”
In addition to the funds brought in by attendance, there will also be an auction on-site to augment earnings further, with some prizes valued at over $7,000, according to Mirisch.
Although the focus of this event is to raise funds, it is also a tournament that will include trophies and prizes. Bowling lanes will be divided by teams of five.
“We will be rewarding trophies to the highest scorers in different categories,” said Mirisch. “As well as team trophies for the highest score of the two games.”
For those who will be forming their own team, their package, for the price of $250, will include the same benefits of the individual package for each member of their five-person teams as well as a lane sponsor, placement of your own banner, and 10 raffle tickets along with a special program acknowledgement.
“It’s going to be a fun day and we are putting money back for our students,” said Mirisch.
