Festive holiday hangouts and adventures
December 8, 2016
Once the stressful final few weeks are over, students can fully commit themselves to the holidays and to a plethora of winter revelries that the season of joy has to offer.
Even in Southern California, where the only official seasons are “hot” and “hotter,” there’s still plenty of wintertime festivities to get into the spirit with.
Just because it probably won’t be snowing on campus or at our homes doesn’t mean you can’t find a winter wonderland in SoCal. Amusement parks like Disneyland, Universal Studios and Knott’s Berry Farm deck themselves out with holiday cheer and are often a great place where you can escape the typical heat and at least pretend to have a white Christmas.
Twenty-year-old pre-law major Alyssa Baccillieri says that Disneyland is her destination for that special holiday feeling.
“I love going to Disneyland,” said Baccilleri. “With all the Christmas decorations, [they] make it feel like it is actually Christmas time in Southern California.”
• Disneyland transforms into a winter wonderland. Enjoy the “It’s a Small World” holiday, A Christmas Fantasy parade, Believe…In Holiday Magic fireworks, Jingle Cruise, and Haunted Mansion holiday.
Other themes parks include:
• Knott’s Berry Farm transforms into “Knott’s Merry Farm” for the holidays. Snoopy’s Ice show, is a perfect combination of ice skating and a classic holiday movie. Christmas Craft Village offers a variety of unique Christmas treats. You can even end the day with a visit to Santa’s Cabin and watching the Calico Tree lighting.
• “Grinchmas” at Universal Studios goes who-tastic for the holidays. Take a trip to the Who-ville post office and be part of the “Grow your Heart 3 Sizes Bigger” campaign by sharing your good deeds and mailing them to the Grinch. Make some one-of-a-kind Christmas ornaments at the Trim up the Tree lot or enjoy a reading of How the Grinch stole Christmas with Cindy-Lou Who.
For a more local event, visit the Ronald Reagan Library in Simi Valley for “Christmas Around the World.” Gain some inspirations for your own Christmas tree by visiting the 26 beautifully decorated Christmas trees representing the 26 countries former President Reagan visited while in office. The exhibit is open through Jan. 8 and is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., except Christmas, and New Year’s Day.
Katie Gumberg, a 20-year-old Kinesiology major, has always appreciates the much simpler activities that didn’t require the all the glitter and glamor, but rather just some holiday spirit to have a great time.
“A night ice skating under the twinkly lights has always been a favorite of mine,” said Gumberg. “At this point, ice skating is a tradition with my friends and family.”
Some skating rinks include:
• Downtown Ice is one of the biggest ice skating rinks in the Los Angeles area. With Pershing’s Square decked out with Christmas decorations, there are many activities being held throughout the holiday season, like a silent disco and DJ nights.
• Holiday Ice rink at The Lakes is perfect if you’re looking to stay close to home but still want to enjoy a night of ice skating. The rink opens daily at 10 a.m. from Nov. 11 to Jan 2.
However, sometimes all you need to get into the holiday spirit is just having a movie night with some friends and binge watching all your favorite holiday movies. Although trying to narrow down a list of the best holiday movies can be tough, some great holiday movies include:
• “The Nightmare Before Christmas”
• “How the Grinch Stole Christmas”
• “Elf”
• All of the five “Home Alone” movies
• “The Santa Clause”
• “Frosty the Snow Man”
• “A Christmas Story”
“I usually start blasting Christmas music starting November,” said Aguilera. “I might be a little crazy and go a tad overboard, but I never really get tired of it.”
Whatever you’re doing for the holidays make sure to enjoy them and all that they offer.
“Regardless of what you do to get in the holiday spirits, make sure you are surrounded by the people you love and anything you do will be fun,” said Baccilleri.
