Moorpark College will be celebrating Constitution Day and Citizenship Day on Monday, Sept. 18.

The event commemorates the formation and signing of the U.S. Constitution which occurred 230-years ago on September 17, 1787, and recognizes all citizens of the United States.

Speakers include Moorpark College President Luis Sanchez, Ventura County Public Defender Ron Kodman and a group of current students sharing their thoughts on the Constitution and civic engagement, according to Joanna Miller, the event organizer, and a professor of Journalism.

“The greatest take away for students would be to learn to appreciate and love the Constitution and all its amendments but particularly the 1st amendment,” said Miller. “We all need to be informed about what’s going on in our world, and the only way to do that is to be engaged.”

Along with free Italian ice from Paradice Italian Ice, there will also be free pocket size Constitution’s being distributed to those who attend, the college has secured the rights to play excerpts from the critically acclaimed musical “Hamilton,” which is also the nominated 2017-18 One Campus One Book. For students who haven’t had a chance to register to vote, representatives from the Ventura County Clerk and Recorder’s office will be there to process registrations. A raffle will be held at the conclusion of the event, and some professors are offering extra credit for students who attend the event.

The event will take place in the quad from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. Students, staff, faculty and the community are all invited. This event is sponsored by the Moorpark College President’s Office and the Student Voice, and additional information is available by contacting Joanna Miller at [email protected].
