Join Moorpark College in welcoming guest speakers Nina Oakley and Benjamin Hatchett as they discuss climate change and what that means for humanity and ecosystems across the globe.
“With October being Campus Sustainability Month, my hope is that this talk will inspire students, faculty, and staff to actively search for avenues they can use to make positive change,” said Director of Student Services and Sustainability, Associated Students of Moorpark College (ASCM), Cassandra Cardoza.
This free event takes place on Oct. 17, 2018, at 5:30 p.m. in RM PS-134. All Moorpark College students, faculty, and staff are encouraged to attend.
Focusing on both past and present factors, the duo will explore everything from high impact historic events to the challenges the future holds while driving home the reality of how our world is changing and how humans play a role in that.
Geology Professor Roger Putnam is eager to spread the word.
“There is a lack of understanding. We need a stable climate. Upsetting the balance brings serious problems for humanity,” said Putnam. “We need a stable climate to grow crops.”
The discussion comes a week after the International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) warned that increased global warming to 1.5 degree Celsius above pre-industrial levels would essentially cause a global ecosystem collapse. The report describes irreversible repercussions to follow if changes are not made. These changes affecting both land and sea as early as the year 2040.
“It is important to understand that climate change is not simply harming biodiversity of the animal kingdom, but also the future of humans as well,” warns 24 year old Environmental Science Major at Moorpark College and Aquarium of the Pacific diver, Sabrina Kennedy. “We are not independent parts of the planet, we are dependent.”
