A man armed with a handgun opened fire at Borderline Bar & Grill in Thousand Oaks, Calif. at 11:20 p.m. Wednesday night, killing 12 people, with 23 others being treated for injuries.

“Some of my friends were there for college night,” said 18-year-old psychology student and Director of Campus Events for the Associated Students at Moorpark College, Sonali Murugan. “It has been a long night and I hope everyone is safe right now.”

The shooter was identified as Ian David Long, a 28-year-old former marine. Long was armed with a .45 caliber Glock handgun, and opened fire at over 100 people in attendance at the Borderline Bar & Grill.

Long engaged in gunfire with Ventura County Sheriff’s, killing one officer, Sgt. Ron Helus. Helus was a 29-year law enforcement veteran, and was set to retire next couple years.

When the police entered the bar, they found that Long had taken his own life. There is no current motive for Long’s actions.

“These shootings happen all the time now…you kind of get desensitized to it after a while,” said 20-year-old president of the Associated Students of Moorpark College Andrew Lopez. “When it happens so close to home it’s something else, it’s not something I would have hoped to ever experience.”

The Borderline Bar & Grill was holding a “college country night”, so many young people were present during the shooting. The identities of all the victims have not been released to the public yet, but we do know that Moorpark College students were present at the bar.

“Extra officers from outside agencies will be patrolling campus and the area,” said officer Andrew Huisenga from Moorpark College Campus Police. “We want everyone to feel safe while they are here.”

The Associated Students of Moorpark Students are holding a vigil tonight at 6 p.m. outside of the Administration building.
