To mark the beginning of the men’s volleyball 2019 season, the Moorpark College volleyball program will hold their annual alumni game, where former players return to the court to play an exhibition game against the current roster.
“[We have held the alumni game for] as long as I can remember, at least since 2005,” said volleyball head coach Aaron Headland. “The program began in 2003, so we didn’t really have any alumni at that point.”
The alumni event allows the current team to connect with former players who helped establish the sport at the college. The coaching staff maintains relationships with alumni using social media.
“I look forward to seeing the alumni players come back. You can learn a lot by getting a perspective from past players,” said sophomore outside hitter, Jordan Moses, reflecting on the wisdom and experience that senior players provide.
Although this event is seen as a fun and laid-back exhibition game, the team still uses this as an opportunity to improve and prepare for the season.
“It’s an exhibition game, so mostly just fun,” said Headland. “But it gives us a chance to improve, so the guys take it seriously.”
The alumni volleyball game will be held tomorrow, Friday, January 18, at 6 p.m. in the Moorpark College gym.
Moorpark College Men’s Volleyball opens this season against Illinois Tech on Friday, January 25.
