National Geographic will be hosting two different themed live events at the Civic Arts Plaza in Thousand Oaks on Friday, Feb. 22 and Friday, March 15.

These events will include two keynote speakers on different days, speaking about their subject of expertise.

Dr. Kara Cooney, an egyptology professor at UCLA, will be presenting “When Women Ruled the World” on Feb. 22 at 8 p.m.

“My event is about why we human beings have been and still are so hostile to women in power,” Dr. Cooney said.

Taking us back to a time where woman ruled the world, Cooney will speak about powerful women, from Cleopatra to Neferusobek. These women were huge influences in ancient times and are often overlooked in the history books.

“Students should attend the event if they feel that half the population should have half the power,” Dr. Cooney said. “We want to discuss the disparities in power within our communities and government and economies.”

Thomas Peschak, assignment photographer for National Geographic Magazine, will be presenting “Wild Sea, Secret Shores” March 15 at 8 p.m.

Taking you on a tour around the sea, Peschak is presenting the photographs he’s taken while in his wild adventures out in the great ocean and discussing their importance. From sharks to humpback whales, the adventure begins with his magnificent artworks of the sea.
