A cappella by Dynamix performs at Multicultural Day

A group of talented singers known as Dynamix drew a crowd of students to the music building for Multicultural Day on April 10.

David Stuart, music director and vice president of Dynamix, was amazed by the turnout of the audience and thought that performing on Multicultural day was very beneficial for them.

“It was pretty awesome because I wasn’t sure how many people knew about us,” said Stuart. “Anytime we have the opportunity to perform in front of people; it is always great because we want more people to know about us.”

Dynamix is a group of 14 students who all come from different musical backgrounds and auditioned to be part of this group. A cappella is music without instrumental accompaniment. One of the members of this group does all the beat boxing which is a form of vocal percussion that keeps the groups beat together. This is the first ever a cappella group Moorpark College has had and this is their first year as a student organization.

Zac Beeker, Dynamix’s president, encourages students to get involved with music and to even join their group. Multicultural Day was not only a great way for Dynamix to share their talent, but a way for students to learn what the music program has to offer from going to their performance, according to Beeker.

“We really got our name out there,” said Beeker. “A lot of people outside the music program came to watch us, so hopefully they can spread our name and the music department to other students around campus.”

Recently, Dynamix attended the International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella (ICCA) which is a competition where a cappella groups from all schools and universities come to showcase their talents and compete against each other. ICCA accepts vocal ensembles of all styles and must have a group of consistent members who attend your school or university. They were also the only community college that was in their local first round of competition. Even though Dynamix didn’t win anything, they saw this as a great opportunity to grow and learn from others.

“It was an excellent opportunity to see what other groups do and become inspired with what we could do,” said Stuart. “We received feedback and advice while performing in front of a large audience.”

Dynamix performed four songs at ICCA; “Maps” by Maroon 5, “On My Side” by Savoi/”Can’t Stop the Feeling” by Justin Timberlake, “Pray You Catch Me” by Beyonce and closed with “It’s Not Over Yet” by For King & Country. Beeker had a solo throughout the entire closing song while the rest of the group backed him up with vocals and vocal percussion from the beat boxer.

Now that Dynamix is back from ICCA and performing more at the college’s events, they are preparing to have auditions for next years group. Many of the members will be returning but they are looking forward to growing their a cappella group even more. They don’t have an exact date for auditions but be sure to check out their social media for more details and events.
