Avengers: Endgame, the 22nd installment of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, premiered this past weekend. Fans crowded movie theaters all over the country and crashed several websites like Fandango during ticket pre-sales. The premiere of Endgame ended the year-long wait for the conclusion to the decimation of half the universe by Thanos at the end of Avengers: Infinity War.
Avengers: Endgame is the combination of the 21 movies that came before it and serves as a perfect swan song to the original six Avengers: Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, The Hulk, Hawkeye and Black Widow.
The movie can be enjoyed by both people that have watched the last two years of MCU movies or at least watched the events that unfolded during Infinity War. However, the main audience of the movie are the fans who have been with MCU since day one with the release of Iron Man back in 2008.
Returning directors Anthony and Joe Russo had the tough mission of making a much better movie after the success of Infinity War. Avengers: Endgame proved the Russo brothers were able to accomplish a close-to-perfect comic book cinematic masterpiece. The movie feels as if it was made by the fans and for the fans of the MCU. Endgame is filled with Easter eggs and call-backs to previous movies of the franchise that will keep viewers entertained throughout the three-hour run time.
Some of the problems the movie seems to run into are the amount of information it throws at the audience at such a fast pace. If you are not a Marvel die hard fan it can be difficult to keep up with everything happening.
Another problem Endgame faces is that while trying to close several story lines, it also creates major plot holes that can leave the audience confused after leaving the theater.
A perfect way to describe the tone of this movie is like your favorite roller coaster at an amusement park. The movie will bring up so many emotions from beginning to end. There are scenes that feel so dark in tone and might bring up a tear or two, yet those scenes are perfectly contrasted by scenes with a lighter tone that will bring up a few laughs. The writers and directors had twenty-one films to perfect the formula for a flawless comic book movie and Avengers: Endgame comes the closest to achieving that out of the 22 movies in the MCU.
This movie was 11 years in the making and is a great example of excellent storytelling and commitment by the writers of the Marvel franchise. The Marvel Cinematic Universe is not over as it will continue to grow and expand. However, Avengers: Endgame is a milestone of an era built over the last decade focused on the founding members of the Avengers and will be a cinematic experience to look back on and remember for generations to come.
