Moorpark College held the semiannual Cash for College event in Fountain Hall on Feb. 8 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., where students received computer access and instruction on how to apply for financial aid.

Cash for College is a program provided by the California Student Aid Commission. It helps students familiarize themselves with the application process through the help of financial aid specialists who speak both English and Spanish.

“We hold this every year in February and October. It’s district-wide and also done at Oxnard and Ventura Colleges. We get a good turnout,” Moorpark College financial aid officer Kim Korinke said.

Financial aid specialist Claudia Solorzano was at the event and answered questions students had regarding the application. “Students who have applied for the FAFSA in the past have to renew it each year, and we can also help them re-apply,” Solorzano said.

Under the Community College Promise Grant, students have the ability to attend their first two years of community college tuition-free. Students may also be eligible to receive the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA, to help with general living expenses.

Moorpark College student David Reyes arrived early Saturday to get help filling out forms.

“This will be the second time that I receive financial aid. The money will help me a lot especially now that I’m going to CSUN,” Reyes said.

Documents required to apply include 2018 student and parent W-2 forms, social security numbers, alien registration number if applicable and a state ID or driver’s license if the student has one.

Korinke explained these same financial aid services are available to Moorpark College students every Wednesday from 4-5 p.m. in Fountain Hall room 117A. Korinke also emphasized that the upcoming deadline to submit financial aid forms in California is March 2.

Oxnard College will hold Cash for College on Feb. 22 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. For more information regarding eligibility for financial aid visit Moorpark College’s Financial Aid Office website.
