On Saturday, March 14, the staff at the Child Development Center will host Discovery Day at Moorpark College from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
The event will feature multiple activities designed for children ages 2-5, but all children below the age of 10 are welcome to join in.
Participants will be able to partake in activities like small boat making, face painting, playing with blocks and more. The children will participate in the activities on their own, but must be supervised by parents at all times.
“We’re very passionate about play-based education where children truly learn by exploring materials, and have that self-centered learning,” Johanna Pimentel said, director of the Discovery Day event.
There will also be a book fair, a hot dog stand and prizes to win in a silent auction. Toy maker Gene West will have toys on display for children to view and play with.
“His entire life, he was creating his own wooden toys and he shares them with the community so the children get to play with those really awesome, almost indestructible toys,” Pimentel stated.
The staff have been preparing the Discovery Day event for over two months now.
“There is always a lot of work beforehand, and we’re all sweating and our hairs turning more grey than it needs to, but by the time we open the doors and the children come in, you see that it’s all really worth it,” Pimentel expressed.
This will be the 30th anniversary for the Discovery Day event, but the goal has always been, “to expose what we do, our play-based learning environment to the community, and of course the fundraiser, to raise funds for the center,” Pimentel said.
Tickets can be bought for $8 on the day of the event for children ages 1-9, and $5 for anyone over the age of 10 at the Child Development Center. Pre-sale tickets can also be bought for one dollar less in person.
