Golf legend Tiger Woods was involved in a single-car crash on Tuesday, Feb. 23 that has left him with multiple leg injuries, according to Woods’ longtime agent Mark Steinberg.
Woods was the only person involved in the car accident which took place Tuesday morning in the neighborhoods of Rancho Palos Verdes in Los Angeles. Woods was transported to UCLA Harbor Medical hospital for surgery on his injuries.
“He is currently in surgery and we thank you for your privacy and support,” Steinberg said in a statement.
NBCLA has reported that Woods is out of surgery, however no detail could be provided.
Woods, 45, was rehabbing from a back procedure that took place on Dec. 23.
In an interview with CBS’ Jim Nantz on Sunday, Woods talked about how he didn’t know if he would be able to play in the Masters that are coming up in a few weeks.
“God I hope so. I gotta get there first,” Woods said in the interview. “This is the only back I’ve got. I don’t have much wiggle room left here.”
There is no word on a timetable or how serious these injuries are.
Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department Lt. Michael White told CBS Los Angeles that the golfer suffered “non-life-threatening injuries.”
On the door of the vehicle that was involved in the accident, it said, “GENESIS INVITATIONAL,” which is the golf tournament that Woods hosted this past weekend in Riviera. It was not only the name of the tournament but also the sponsored vehicle for the event that was a part of the wreck.
Due to Woods rehabbing, he was not able to participate in the tournament although he did present the winner of the tournament, Max Homa, with the trophy. The 15-time Majors champion on Monday, Feb. 22 played golf with the likes of NBA legend Dwyane Wade and Actors Jada Pinkett Smith and David Spade.
Former President Donald Trump and Woods have been long-time friends. Trump had this to say about the accident: “Get well soon, Tiger. You are a true champion!” President Trump awarded Woods the Presidential Medal of Freedom in May of 2019.
PGA issued a statement on Twitter following the news of the accident.
“We have been made aware of Tiger Woods’ car accident today. We are awaiting further information when he comes out of surgery. On behalf of the PGA TOUR and our players, Tiger is in our prayers and will have our full support as he recovers,” the statement said.
