The Associated Students of Moorpark College held a virtual ASMC meeting covering the Cultural and Community Engagement Event celebrating and educating students on different cultures, internship opportunities and a Latinx heritage event.
In the Sept. 22 meeting, the ASMC board was asked by ASMC President Mary Poitier to increase the funds to have ZuZu African Acrobats participate. The Zuzu African Acrobats would express their culture through a performance then speak about their Tanzanite African culture. The board agreed to raise the budget to $5,750 for the event to include the new performance.
Poitier emphasized why she thought adding the ZuZu performance to the event budget was important.
“I think it ties along with everything I am trying to do,” Poitier said. “It’s more cultural to really focus on the culture of the person. I think what I tried to do is emphasize on the act itself.”
The meeting then moved on to discuss internship opportunities. The Navy Research Enterprise Internship Program offers a 10-week remote internship for STEM Majors. NREIP has a starting stipend of $7,000 for students working on their STEM Associate’s degree. Students that are interested can join the virtual Zoom information meeting on Thursday, Sept. 30 from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Suzette Martinez Valladares at the Office of Assemblywoman is also accepting resumes from students with an interest in working in politics. There are two to four spots open until they are filled. Students can submit their resumes to Project Specialist Dr. Celine Park.
Park works in Fountain Hall room 213 directly above the student business office; she helps students with resumes, job applications, one on one career coaching and assistance with internship opportunities.
“Before you make a change in your major, you kinda just want to dip your feet in the water to see if this is the right area for you,” Park said. “A lot of our students do internships, that is the number one most popular and best way for students to get hands-on training.”
The next agenda item was a Latinx heritage month flamenco tropical music and dance performance on Monday, Oct. 4 from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the Moorpark Center Quad. Students and faculty have the option to get a meal from a Latinx food truck that will be offering tacos or sopes, which are tortillas covered with lettuce and salsa.
ASMC Director of Public Relations Priscilla Saerang shared her thoughts on Latinx Heritage Month activities.
“Latinx heritage month is significant to me because of how it recognizes the people that surround me and reminds everyone that they matter,” Saerang said. “It’s good to know that Latinx people are receiving more recognition and representation, knowing I want the exact thing when it comes to every other cultural remembrance month.”
ASMC hosts meetings that are open to the public every Wednesday at 7 p.m. More information regarding ASMC and discussed events can be found through their LinkTree.
