On Thursday, Aug. 29, Moorpark College held their semiannual Transfer Day event in the quad and Raider Walk, giving students a chance to talk to university admissions representatives and learn more about the transfer process.
With over 50 representatives from a myriad of colleges and universities, including CSU’s and UC’s, students had the opportunity to learn about the transfer process, ask direct questions to admissions representatives and gain instantaneous responses.
Students walked around Raider Walk and observed the different university booths, approaching those that interested them.
Not only were students able to learn about universities, but the first 300 students were given free Mister Softee’s ice cream to commemorate the day with a treat.
One of the many stands on Raider Walk was for the Career Center, with employees explaining the transfer process and giving more information to students curious to learn more.
Kirsten Vassie, the Career Center’s project specialist, expressed the importance of having a Career Center for students, not only to organize Transfer Day, but also for the educational and employment assistance they offer.
“[The Career Center] offers support to students when updating a resume and preparing for mock interviews and looking at personal statements…preparing for that professional step with transferring towards a higher academic level,” Vassie explained.
Vassie also wanted to expand on the Career Center’s mission statement to help students further their educational and professional journeys, as well as the importance of building a community and taking opportunities to network.
“Something that the Career Center is really passionate about is that we really want to support our students within our local community and whatever community they may transfer to so that they have that connection,” Vassie stated.
Jesus Flores, a representative of the California State University, Northridge who works in their Educational Opportunity Program, talked about the impact that the program had on his life as a first-generation student.
“If it wasn’t for the EOP program, I probably wouldn’t have graduated. I was a transfer student myself from San Diego to Northridge and not knowing anybody on campus,” he said.
Flores then went on to further explain how the EOP program helped him succeed as a student and how it led to him working at the very same organization.
“But I did apply to EOP and that’s where I met my roommate, got to meet my faculty for my major. So, if it wasn’t for EOP I probably would have said, ‘you know what, forget this,’” Flores continued.
EOP is not limited to CSUN; all CSU campuses and some UCs offer similar programs dedicated to supporting students. Moorpark College also has its own Extended Opportunity Programs and Services that provides financial and educational support that includes— but is not limited to— academic success workshops, book grants and meal vouchers.
Programs like EOP see success in stories like Flores’ and others like him. Both Vassie and Flores believe in the program’s vitality because they have seen the impact they have.
Ayla Jalil, a first-year student at Moorpark College majoring in biology, who plans on transferring to a four-year university, talks about the importance of knowing about programs like Transfer Admission Guarantee and similar events to Transfer Day.
“There aren’t many social things at Moorpark so you get to know who are on the same route as you,” Jalil said.
She also comments on why she believes that having in-person events is more beneficial as opposed to students being left to research on their own.
“I feel like people are less willing to go out of their way to look for these things when they’re not extremely passionate about these things,” Jalil explained. “So, when it’s kind of set out in front of you, it’s just much easier to go through it and look at it.”
Moorpark College’s Transfer Day event aimed to help guide students further along in their educational journey, providing key information and the tools necessary to further expand their knowledge.
