Sophomore post and captain Riley Abraham has had a career season for the Moorpark College Women’s Basketball team. Though they did not make it past the first round of playoffs this season, Abraham stepped up and performed for her team.

She has been named to the First Team All State, only the third Lady Raider to do so (Chenne Tuimoloau (2003) and Karina Hardman (1988)). Abraham was third in the WSC for scoring at 22.9 points per game. She led the conference in blocked shots and rebounds.

“She’s extremely competetive; consistent; always getting double digits” Head Coach Remy McCarthy said.

On Feb. 5 of this season, Abraham broke the school scoring record with 43 points. She also had 26 rebounds and blocked seven shots that game.

“It was really an unbelievable game,” McCarthy said. “I don’t know many athletes, even professional ones, that could do that.”

In the WSC she is third in field goals (and percentage), overall points and points per game. She led the conference in offensive and defensive rebounds, total rebounds and rebounds per game. She started every game she played in and made an example through her own performance of how the rest of her team should play.

“Riley is the best post player I’ve ever played with,” sophomore guard Sam McCarthy said. “She can catch anything; she’s consistent and her ability to score when we get her the ball is unparalleled.”

In December 2013, Abraham was named the Week 2 Western State Conference Player of the Week. This honor was given after she lead her team to the 2013 Antelope Valley College Tournament Championship. Here, she broke a tournament record for total rebounds at 46. Abraham also earned the Tournament MVP for her outstanding performance.

“It’s going to be very hard to replace her next season,” McCarthy said.

The best players constantly grow and strive to get better, which is exactly what Abraham does. The four-year Varsity player from Rio Mesa High School has done nothing but improve throughout her entire career. As a freshman at Rio Mesa she averaged 5.6 points per game and by her senior year took it to 12.9. By her Sophomore season at Moorpark it was 22.9. In high school she averaged 11.9 rebounds per game and by the end of her final season at Moorpark had an average of 13.8.

“My stats don’t matter to me,” said Abraham. “It’s all about the team and any way I can help us win; I’ll do whatever it takes.”

Even though they are not on her mind, almost all the conference statistics are lead by Abraham. Her name was mentioned after every game and throughout the entire season. Abraham has now verbally committed to Point Loma Nazarene University for the Fall of 2014 to further her basketball career.
