The Oxnard College Condors baseball team will now officially sit atop the Western State Conference standings permanently, as they wrapped up their first WSC title since 2005 with a 10-7 victory over Allan Hancock College April 30 at Oxnard.
According to Condors head coach Jon Larson, the team can always use another “W” in the win column.
“[The win] helps our RPI. An extra win doesn’t hurt going into the playoffs,” Larson said. “We are looking at a second or third seed.”
The Condors (26-10, 16-4 WSC) came into the game having already clinched the conference with a win over the Bulldogs on April 29. However, the Bulldogs (21-14, 13-7) put up a fight knowing they were lonely number two in the WSC standings.
After the last out of the game, the team celebrated their playoff berth, posing for pictures with their index finger held showing “number one.”
The postseason for the Condors will begin next Friday, May 7, at home against an opponent TBA.
Larson believes his team won the game based on how they started the game. The Condors came out swinging, scoring four runs in the first inning.
“We came out and put runs on the board, early, with the wind blowing as it was,” Larson said.
However, the Condors let Hancock back into the game by giving up several walks, in the later innings, which turn into runs, although they eventually held on for the victory.
According to Larson, the team gave the Bulldogs too many free passes.
“[We had] too many walks. I think we had about 13,” he said. “We had pitchers that were rusty and hadn’t thrown in awhile.”
Larson hopes the momentum is carried into the postseason, knowing they will be playing at home in the first round.
