The Ventura College baseball team proved to be no match for Glendale College, as the Pirates crushed the Gauchos 12-0, Feb. 18 at home.
The Pirates had 12 hits in the game, including seven doubles that contributed to ten runs.
The Pirates (3-3) were able to build a huge lead against the Gauchos (4-3) with six runs in the sixth inning and four more runs in the seventh.
In the sixth inning, the Pirates started the six-run onslaught, by getting runners on first and second with nobody out on a walk and throwing error. A base hit and walk later, Thomas Quakenbush hit a two-run double. Ricky Lipman followed Quakenbush with a two-run double of his own to cap off the inning.
The seventh inning was much like the sixth, with the Pirates continuing its offensive success. Adam Barry hit a one-run single to make it 8-0, then Lipman and Joseph Luna each hit two-run doubles to increase the score to 11-0.
Pirates’ starting pitcher Anthony Martinez pitched well, hitting his locations, creating easy outs for the Pirates’ fielders.
At the start of the ninth inning, Martinez was pulled from the game for relief pitcher James Pinto, pitching eight innings and shutting out the Gauchos.
Pinto was able to secure the win, and get the final out on a ground out to second base.
Second baseman Derek Ring believes his team got its win based on the great pitching it had.
“Our pitcher played a good game, he pitched eight shut-out innings,” he said. “Our closer finished the game.”
