They say there is no crying in baseball, but for the Oxnard College baseball team, a disappointing 17-5 blowout loss to Palomar College in the first round of the playoffs makes it hard not to.
The Condors entered the game as the No. 3 seed while the Comets came in as the No. 14 seed. However, the Comets proved that anything can happen in the playoffs.
According to head coach Jon Larson, he knew his team didn’t play as well as they had been playing during the regular season.
“I didn’t think we played a good game while they did,” he said. “They had a big game while they all were able to hit the ball well.”
The Condors’ loss in the first game of a best-of-three series puts them in a particularly tough position; they will need to win two games in a row at home including a do-or-die game on Saturday morning to advance into the second round of the playoffs.
After a flyout that ended the game for the Condors, Larson gathered the team together and tried to soften the wound. Larson tried to have his team quickly put behind the loss and look ahead.
“I told them to forget about it. Stay focus and get ready for a big game tomorrow,” he said.
According to Larson, the team’s defense needs to get better by game two. The Condors’ defense allowed six runs to the Comets in the first inning and 13 by the bottom of the sixth inning.
The Condors put up three runs in the third inning after they got into a short hitting rhythm. However, the large Comets lead proved to be too big of a hurdle to overcome.
The best-of-three series continues Saturday, May 8, with game two at the at Oxnard College at 11 a.m. and game three, if necessary, shortly after game two.
