The Biology Club planted a new tree at Ventura College for Earth Day, April 22.
The coast live oak, or Quercus agrifolia, is a native plant to Ventura. It was planted between the LRC and the Science Building.
Club secretary and art major Sarah Flesher, 53, talked to local nurseries, asking if they would donate a tree to the campus. In the end, she found that Baron Brothers Nursery in Camarillo was willing to donate to the campus and the cause.
Club members then talked with the maintenance department to figure out the best place to plant it.
“The club would like to give a big thank you to Bob Forrest for his help,” said Djuna Spring, 45, a nursing student and co-secretary for the club. “This is our campus; we need to have a voice in what our campus looks like.”
Aswell Trophy donated a plaque for the tree giving its common and scientific name for students to read.
Kammy Algiers, club adviser and biology instructor, said she hopes to see more local plants such as deerweed, sages, lupines and coreopsis around campus.
The club has wanted to plant a tree since last semester, but a club spokesperson said the group felt that Earth Day would be an appropriate day to do the actual planting. They hope to plant more native plants around campus, both to beautify the campus and to have plants for the science and biology department to use as teaching aids.
The club does not currently have a set meeting time; for more information, contact Algiers at [email protected].
