In Luis Monroy’s final playing year at Moorpark College, he has made a name for himself by uplifting the new 2014 roster while taking the team to a promising level.
Monroy, a currently registered kinesiology major, plans to graduate with an emergency medical technician certificate that started with a long-time dream of becoming a paramedic influenced by his cousin from childhood who had served in the military for 12 years.
“I’ve always been into helping people ever since I was a little kid,” said Monroy. “I would watch (my cousin) and he would show me all that stuff and I really got into it. He really inspired me to do all that.”
After finishing up at Moorpark College, Monroy has a plan to transfer with a scholarship in soccer to the university that best suits his passion for becoming an EMT.
According to Moorpark’s soccer star-player, Monroy was not always the “athletic-type.” When playing soccer for his elementary P.E. class one day, Monroy was put in front of the goal and was told to “stand there” while kids kicked balls left and right towards him.
“I dove one time and made a save,” said Monroy. “I used to watch soccer with my dad so I did what the goalie did just by watching TV. I got hyped up and just started doing that.”
While growing up and finding his passions, Monroy had a solid foundation to help nourish the talents that make him who he is today. Monroy said his father has been by his side through all of the way.
“My dad is my ultimate number one fan,” said Monroy. “No matter what it is, my dad’s there.”
Men’s soccer’s head coach Sean Roche, described Monroy as “consistent” and “persistent” with his efforts. According to Roche, being a goalkeeper takes strategy and skill. In the first 11 games of the season, Monroy has had 59 saves in total.
“The stats speak for themselves,” said Roche. “His performance has been outstanding every game. He is going to go very far.”
The future is looking up for the king of defense, according to Roche. The expectations for Monroy are set high with all of the “leadership qualities” that he possesses.
“He is humble on and off the field,” said Coach Roche. “He has done very well for us. He is going to be very successful as a human and a goalkeeper.”
This 2014 season has been a huge “progression” season, with several new players added to the 2014 roster, according to the goal keeper. Although the team’s record is disappointing with no wins, three ties, and nine losses as of Oct 17, Monroy said that the team continues to improve.
“From game one to present, the team has progressed insanely,” said Monroy.
Moorpark’s number one defensive goalkeeper has made his mark at Moorpark College through his positive attitude and brilliant talent in soccer. The possibilities are endless for this exceptional player.
