Moorpark College suffered a humiliating 17-0 drubbing at the hands of Santa Barbara City College over a three inning stretch at Raider Stadium Tuesday afternoon. Sloppy infield play led to five errors for Moorpark, and walks, coupled with timely Vaqueros hitting all contributed to the debacle.
The Vaqueros got five runs in the third inning and Raiders starter Wyatt Birg was chased from the game for his first loss of the season. His record is now 3-1. The roof caved in on the Raiders when Santa Barbara upped the ante in the fourth and added seven runs. The Vaqueros completed the rout in the fifth with an additional five runs.
“Their guy pitched well and we didn’t do a whole lot against him,” head coach, Mario Porto said. “You get down by a bunch; you start to lose your concentration, and start feeling sorry for yourself. That’s what happens.”
Santa Barbara’s right-handed starter, Sophomore Sean Barry, pitched seven complete shutout innings for a well deserved win. He kept the Raider offence off balance with a combination of pitches, allowing just a single hit in the seventh. Moorpark scattered three hits in the late innings, but at that stage, the game was well beyond reach.
After Birg was toppled in the third, five additional Raiders pitchers came to the mound. Things only went from bad to worse for Moorpark until Christian Apodaca came on in the sixth, and worked two and two third innings of shutout relief in a lost cause.
“Some pitches [Birg] thought were strikes, he let it get to him,” Porto said. “When that happens they lose their focus. It was a bad day, but we’ll bounce back. We’ll be ok.”
The Raiders record is now 6-3. Moorpark’s next home game at Raider Stadium is against Pierce College in an early start, Saturday, February 17 at 1 p.m.
