This semester the Associated Students is offering 14 scholarships to students with awards ranging from $250 to $400.

These scholarships are exclusively for veterans, foter youth and students in leadership positions on campus

“We want to help people who really contribute,” said Melvin Kim, the Director of Academic Affairs for the A.S.

The A.S. feels that most scholarships focus on academics and it wanted to do something different, Kim said. So when the A.S. received $5,000, it decided to create these unique scholarships.

According to the official application, there are general requirements that apply to all of the scholarships. These include being continuing students at Moorpark or transfer students, having a current Moorpark College ID card and never having violated the Moorpark College Student Conduct Code. Transcripts and letters of recommendation are required.

The application states that two scholarships of $250 each will be awarded to veterans attending Moorpark College. To become eligible the student must be enrolled in 12 or more units, have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher and demonstrate proof of service in the armed forces.

Two scholarships of $250 each will be awarded to students who are current or former foster youth, according to the official application. The applicant must be currently enrolled in nine units or more at Moorpark college and have a cumulative GPA of at least 2.5.

The A.S. has directed these scholarships toward groups that it feels are usually overlooked when it comes to scholarships, Kim said.

Lastly, 10 scholarships of $400 each will be awarded to students who demonstrate leadership in clubs, organizations, performing arts, sports, and other out of class activities. To be eligible, students must be enrolled in 12 units or more and have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.

Kim said, A.S. wants to encourage leadership and involvement in student organizations.

“We want to help as many students as we can,” Kim said.

The applications are available in the Scholarship Office in Fountain Hall 210C. They are due by Wednesday, March 11 in the Scholarship Office.
