In the bustling halls of Moorpark College, a realm of magic and adventure exists within the Moorpark College Wizards Club. For those unfamiliar with this enchanting world, in its walls await thrilling gaming experiences and a vibrant community of fellow adventurers.

Moorpark College student Isaac Soles, the president of Wizards Club, helps paint a vivid picture, describing the club as a sanctuary for gaming enthusiasts of all types.

“We are a gaming space where people from all types of gaming hobbies can come together to explore gaming interests,” Soles said.

Having been a club member for the past two years, Vice President Anthony Yoon reinforces the club’s commitment to inclusivity and acceptance.

“We created a safe space for people to explore and enjoy their hobbies free of judgment,” explained Yoon.

Earning over 100 eager sign-ups at the Club Rush and Student Services Fair on Feb. 14, students may feel intimidated navigating the challenges of such a large group. However, the Moorpark Wizards had found ways to work around that newfound challenge.

“When you have a large amount of people, having meetings focused on one gaming hobby can be limiting,” Soles shared. “So our meetings and events are more like public meeting spaces, where anyone can come and interact with any hobby that they are interested in.”

To ensure accessibility and connectivity, the club maintains a large, accessible meeting space in the Campus Center Conference Room in the back of the cafeteria. They also utilize a club Discord server for seamless communication and coordination.

Brendan Trick, a third-year student at Moorpark College, helped elaborate on the unique flexibility that the club has for its members when it comes to events.

“It’s the one club that can extend far beyond the club meetings. We can set up events anytime we like even with a limited amount of students so there is flexibility in that,” Trick said.

What truly sets the Moorpark College Wizards Club apart are its special events. They have mostly only done themed nights, with their most recent one being for Halloween. In the future, both Soles and club members have some exciting plans in mind, like a charity game night.

“We have yet to do anything other than the themed nights, but we have some fun events planned. We would love to do something like a charity game night where we could raise money for a local charity. That is still very much in the ‘working out logistics’ phase,” said Soles.

Yoon echoes this sentiment, emphasizing the club’s dedication to charitable initiatives like a charity board game night intending to benefit an on-campus charity that is in the works.

“We aim to work with a charity already on campus, but we also have off-campus charities in mind,” Yoon explained.

The club offers a supportive environment for introducing newcomers to intricate role-playing games, like the world of Dungeons & Dragons.

“For spring, we plan to host some ‘starter games’ where players can play a game or two and get familiar with the mechanics,” explained Soles.

The Moorpark College Wizards Club harbors lofty aspirations for the future. Soles shares their vision for “The Archives,” a vast project to make books and gaming materials more accessible.

“We want players to be able to come in and start playing without any financial contributions. So we started a mini-game library that I call ‘The Archive.’ This library will contain some of the books necessary to play,” Soles said.
