Multicultural Day celebrates 25 years of culture

By Jessica Frantzides

Moorpark College’s Multicultural Day returns on April 14 to mark its 25th anniversary here on campus with the fitting theme of the year being 25 years of Future Past.

Multicultural Day is an annual celebration of cultures from around that world. The day features many activities for students to experience, such as performances, demonstrations, lectures, music, dance, and hands-on activities, according to the Moorpark College website. There are also student and outside vendors that sell their merchandise during the event, as well as food trucks that offer a variety of foods for lunch.

This event is organized as an officially sanctioned alternative day of instruction designed to provide knowledge and appreciation for other cultures, according a press release from VCCCD.

Many professors allow their students the day off of class in order to go experience the activities. Other professors even give extra credit for proof of participation. However, it is important to note that classes are not cancelled, it said.

Also available to order this year, sweatshirts, t-shirts, tote bags, and mugs with this year’s thematic design on it. If interested, pricing and information can be found at www.moorparkcollege.edu/mcd.

Detailed programs and the schedule detailing activity time slots will be available for students online at the above address by the end of March.

Multicultural Day begins at 8:30 a.m. and continues until 2:30 p.m. Admission is free and the event is public. Local K-12 schools and colleges are encouraged to come as well.
