Both have their MVP hopeful, both have their Cy Young hopeful, both have their off-the-field problems, both are preseason favorites for their division, and both have a good chance of making it to the world series, but the biggest question is, which baseball team runs L.A.?
“The Dodgers always have and always will,” says Jacob Franklin, business marketing major, 22. “The Dodgers have more championships than the Angels, and were the first team in L.A.”
The Los Angeles Dodgers were established in 1883 in Brooklyn, New York, and won one World Series in the big apple. The Dodgers then headed to Los Angeles in before the 1958 season, and have since won five additional World Series championships.
The Los Angeles Angles of Anaheim were established in 1961, and played the 1962-1965 seasons at Dodger Stadium. The former strictly Los Angeles team, have one World Series to their name, however, it was when they were known as the Anaheim Angeles. The Angeles have gone through many changes of cities since they were established.
The Los Angeles Angles of Anaheim are currently 9-10 to start the season, good for second place in the division. Plagued by early injures they look to bounce back and take first in the American League West.
The Los Angeles Dodgers are currently first in the National League west, and too, have faced early injures. Kenley Jansen, Yasiel Puig, Hyun-Jin Ryu, and other relief pitchers are on the DL (disabled list, or list for players that are out due to injury).
The Angles have reigning AL MVP Mike Trout, and of course the Dodgers have reigning two-time NL Cy Young winner, and NL MVP in Clayton Kershaw.
“Two great teams, but the Angles run LA right now,” said Jordan Kessler, criminal justice major, 20. “The Angles are the last team to win the World Series out of the two. And we are the more exciting team.”
Both teams may be exciting, have great teams, and have their hopefuls. In fact one may be better than the other during any time in the season yet regardless, the Los Angeles Dodgers run Los Angeles.
The Dodgers scream “Los Angeles lifestyle,” they scream “Hollywood,” with their flamboyant, arrogant young guns, that love the limelight. Their stadium, is in the middle of Los Angeles, The Angels have gone through countless name changes, while switching between cities. The Dodgers are an absolute staple of Los Angeles.
Famous celebrities from L.A., don’t root for the Angels, they root for the Dodgers, the team that embodies the streets of L.A. Snoop Dogg, Larry King, Magic Johnson (part owner of the Dodgers), Kobe Bryant, and countless others bleed blue and white.
The Dodgers may not
always have the better team, but with their history and their grit, they run L.A.
