The Writing Center’s workshop series has their second session tomorrow and will help students successfully understand reading material that is assigned. The series is called the Seven Secrets of College Success.

Beth Gillis Smith, Writing Center co-director, said that in this event, students who struggle will receive help in reading and understanding passages that are assigned for class.

“It’s how to overcome that experience so that you’re making the most out of the time you have,” said Smith.

At the workshop series students can improve their reading and writing skills while interacting with other students to excel in literacy.

Smith encourages students to attend the workshop series, as it provides students with steps and skills to give them motivation while pursuing a college education.

“Invest in your own success,” said Smith. “Learn how to get help and learn about the resources available on campus.”

Smith understands that students have their own schedules that are filled with work or family responsibilities.

According to Smith, the Writing Center’s focus is to empower students with the knowledge of resources available to become successful.

Students who are unable to attend the workshop series can schedule individual appointments with a tutor.

James Carton, an 18-year-old undecided major, has never attended the workshop but shows a lot of interest.

“I’ve always been curious about getting better at writing,” said Carton.

Rodrigo Moscoso, a 20-year-old tutor at Moorpark College, hopes more students that are having trouble with course work drop by to receive the guidance they need.

“It’s a great tool for anyone and it’s free,” Moscoso said. “We are all very helpful and it’s a very safe environment.”

The workshop series will continue on Sept. 8, and 16, at 12 p.m., Sept. 22 and 30 at 1 p.m. and Oct. 6 at 12 p.m.

At no cost for assistance with any subject, students can consult with a tutor at the Writing Center. The Writing Center is located in the LLR Building, Third Floor, Room 332.
