Raiders football got off to a slow start by losing to Long Beach City College on Saturday at Moorpark College.

Head Coach Mike Stuart was proud of the team overall for not letting the loss affect them too much.

“I am really proud of the new guys who came out and made their first ever college start,” said Coach Stuart. “We made lots of mistakes, but we are going to have a good week in practice and fix them.”

Coach Stuart said that there were a few bright spots despite the loss. The defense and special teams made some great plays, including an 80 yard interception return for a touchdown by new freshman linebacker Inoke Ngalo.

Going into this weekend’s game, there is no clear cut starting quarterback for the team, and that will be one thing the Raiders will look at during practice.

“I’m glad that we had this problem in week one and not week five,” said Coach Stuart. “Obviously right now, Christian [Hammock] has the lead, but it is still wide open.”

Moorpark’s next opponent, Chaffey, is similar to Long Beach because they are loaded with talented individuals who potentially could play Division 1 football next year, according to Coach Stuart.

Chaffey defeated their opening week’s opponent, Orange Coast College, 41-16.

“We will be better prepared because Chaffey plays similar to Long Beach,” said Coach Stuart. “The main thing we need to work on is giving our defense enough time to rest.”

Moorpark plays Chaffey College away this Saturday at 6 p.m. Their next home game will be against Ventura College on Oct. 2nd at 6 p.m.
