The Lady Raiders were swept by Irvine Valley College in three sets: 25-22, 25-17 and 25-16 in their home opener on Wednesday.

The Lady Raiders kept up with Irvine on all the three sets, but were never able to take the lead. Freshman Cindy Norris led Moorpark with eight kills. Freshman Meghan Conlan had seven kills. The Raiders had 27 kills in total. Sierra Joyner contributed 18 digs out of her teams’ total of 60 digs.

Raiders Head Coach Steve Burkhart felt that his team missed a few opportunities to score points and it cost them the game.

“I feel like our execution and ball control just wasn’t enough to beat a team like that,” said Coach Burkhart. “We will just have to work harder.”

Irvine Valley’s Kayla Scheevel had a total of 13 kills. Irvine had a better kill percentage than Moorpark as they were able to execute 33 percent of the time. Moorpark was only able to complete their kills 14 percent of the time.

Team captain Cassidy Simental felt she could have done a better job as team captain and felt she needed to lead more.

“I feel like I need to talk more to lead the team,” said Simental. “I also just need to have more positive energy.”

Simental had one kill and scored three points for the Lady Raiders. Norris scored the most points for the Lady Raiders, with 10.

Assistant Coach Daniel Freeman felt that the team did well and will be ready for conference play soon.

“We have a lot of really talented players,” said Coach Freeman. “Come November, we’re going to be ready for that next step.”

The women’s volleyball team’s next game will be
this Friday at College of the Canyons at 5 p.m. Their next home game will not be until
Sept. 30 at 6 p.m. against Citrus College.
